Reflections on an English Class

This week, our IGCSE English teacher, Dr Sarah Sneddon, reflects on what both she and her group have learned this year...

During our last IGCSE English Language class of the term, my students reflected on what they have studied this year, what they have learned and what is still to be done.  Their enthusiasm and honesty inspired me to think about the last three terms from my perspective and it made me realise that I have learned a huge amount from them too.  While covering the IGCSE curriculum and experimenting with different writing genres, my willing students have shared a wealth of information about subjects as diverse as paint balling, Hampton Court and the International Space Station.  In class, I’ve benefitted from brilliant IT advice, help in keeping my slides tidy (!) and been taught useful texting conventions to keep the chat box zipping along nicely.  This year’s group included students of many different nationalities, so we used texts at different times of the year to reflect this.  We’ve analysed texts about Ramadan and Eid as well as Christmas and Halloween; my knowledge of different cultures has taken a huge leap forward.  Thank you, IGCSE class 2017-19 for all you’ve taught me.  I look forward to teaching you again next year.
