Making Maths Fun in Year 5

In the final term of this year our Year 5 classes designed their own board games. Here is their teacher Hannah Buchannan telling us about their last few lessons:

Have you ever designed your own board game? We finished off the term of Maths this year with our work on problem solving and thinking laterally. We especially enjoyed the matchstick challenge and solving a sudoku puzzle together! Most of us had no idea how to solve them and by the end we were experts!

In our last lesson we played board games the year 5 children had designed themselves. All of the games had a Mathematical element as well as a theme. The designed boards included a tropical island with trap doors to hidden worlds, a jungle with a rope-bridge shortcut, shopping with fun breaks for refreshments and even the Avengers: Infinity War, with heroes against villains! We rolled an online dice, solved Mathematical problems and used the clipart feature within our classroom software as our board game counters. We had a fun last Maths lesson altogether, and I hope the students will continue to refine their games and play them again with their families!

We still have places remaining for the new school year, starting September 2018, in our morning Year 5 class with Mrs Buchanan. Contact us at for more details and to request a registration form.
